Our Story

VEA was created from a real story of two dogs and a human.

Patricia Porter with Taki the Shiba Inu

The inspiration behind VEA is deeply personal for me, rooted in my journey as a pet parent to both Taki and Yuki.

What's almost unbelievable is that both of them, years apart and with completely different backgrounds, were diagnosed with early-stage kidney disease.

Taki, my Shiba Inu rescue, came to me with no medical history. When he was diagnosed, I felt completely unprepared. I didn't know what he had been eating, what had contributed to it, or how to properly support him moving forward. Nutrition suddenly became everything, but I was left trying to figure it out on my own, piecing together recommendations, second-guessing choices, and hoping I was doing the right thing.

Then came Yuki.

With Yuki, I had more access to care, more data, more involvement. And yet, when she was diagnosed with early-stage kidney disease, I found myself in a similar position, trying to navigate what to feed her, how to slow progression, and how to make the best decisions day to day. Even with a loving care team, the connection between diagnosis, nutrition, and ongoing management still felt fragmented.

That's when it really clicked for me.

This isn't just a medical issue — it's a guidance issue. Pet parents are being asked to make critical, daily decisions, especially around nutrition, without a clear, continuous plan.

And through both journeys, one thing became very clear: veterinarians are the heroes. They have the knowledge, the training, and the intent to guide us, but they're often working within systems that don't give them the time, tools, or connected data to fully support pet parents in the way they want to.

There's a gap between what is diagnosed in the exam room and what happens at home every single day — and kidney disease, especially, lives in that gap.

With my background in AI and healthcare technology, I saw an opportunity to change that.

I created VEA to empower veterinarians to extend their guidance beyond the exam room, giving them tools to deliver clear, personalized, and continuous care plans, especially when it comes to nutrition and chronic disease management.

Because managing something like kidney disease shouldn't feel like guesswork.

For pet parents like me, and for pets like Taki and Yuki, it should feel like a clear path forward, guided by a veterinarian who has everything they need to lead the way.
